The Art of
the Hypothetical...
Imagine an environment where
active participation is encouraged by involving people with
questions that challenge their assumptions and stimulate active
discussion and debate.
This provides an entertaining and
thought-provoking environment while delivering a learning
outcome - and more often than not, the participants are still
discussing it days and even weeks later...
The Socratic
Method
The Socratic Method is using a series of questions in order to
help a person or group discover their underlying
thoughts, beliefs and knowledge on a subject. It also
assists them to consider the validity of their point of
view.
Participants are given a chance to experience a safe
environment whereby they can present their ideas on
hypothetical situations in order to better understand and
relate to real situations.
While traditionalists who use this method are known for
singling out a participant for questioning, Leigh St John
effectively combines her training and facilitating backgrounds
to support and encourage, involving the entire
group.
The Art of The
Hypothetical
Brought
to popular culture by Geoffrey Robertson QC, the
Hypothetical style of debate and analysis is a similar
method of communicating, teaching and facilitating to the
Socratic.
The hypotheticals involve the participants in an active
learning environment where they have the opportunity to explore
different points of view, challenge their own point of view,
and take an active role in their own self-development and their
exploration of the subject matter.
The Result?
An energized and fun-filled environment where everyone is
challenged to think, reflect and learn...
The Topics?
Because of the style of this workshop, the topics can be quite
varied.
Although most of Leigh’s work is in the area of ‘soft skills’,
the process is also useful for challenging current
work-practices and for general interest topics in a conference
environment for example.
